Spiritual Urgency | Stedelijk Museum Schiedam
Spirituality is alive and well among a new vanguard of creators. Young, interdisciplinary artists are each in their own way embracing, celebrating and spreading the value of spirituality. With Spiritual Urgency, we, as co-curators and campaign makers in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, zoom in on the meaning of spirituality and challenge you to go on a holistic journey through the museum.
On view are works by the most current, cross-disciplinary creators, including: Nick Verstand, Jennifer Tee, Memo Akten, Marlou Fernanda, Tim Wes, Shertise Solano and Asma Elbadawi. Artistic productions such as the collaboration between the Daily Paper label and artist Alexandre Nitzsche are also part of the selection. The works are shown alongside kindred artists from art history, such as herman de vries, Wassily Kandinsky, Jacoba van Heemskerck and Charley Toorop. This is precisely how it becomes clear that artists have always played the role of spiritual guides. Each artist draws from different personal, cultural or religious sources. The exhibition is not about differences, but rather about the common denominator: the urgency of spirituality. Test

The exhibition is part of the New Art program line. This experimental line aims to broaden our view of contemporary artistic expressions. We do this in part by making room for collaborations with new networks that have emerged from popular culture and/or non-Western art traditions.
Spiritual Urgency is curated by Eliza Bordeaux of Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in collaboration with a team of external co-curators: Cathelijne Blok & Imaan van der Zwan (TittyMag), Qasim Arif (ILLM) and André Marques & Tim Wes (Together & Dedicated & (Museum)ParX).
“Spirituele Urgentie” was on view in Stedelijk Museum Schiedam from 26 november 2022 until 10 april 2023.
In addition to the components mentioned above, the task of producing the official opening also lay with T&D. A gathering of a lot of particularities among the 400 invited guests was the result. Before one could enter the halls, the program began with an art and music performance by Phantom Wizard and Trippy Goddess, a spiritual handwashing ritual and a custom-curated food experience by the collective Tabili. To cap it off, Marlou Fernanda took us through a breathtaking piece of performance art that was in line with the work acquired for this exhibition. We closed our eyes for a moment and relived the blissful moments during the opening of our exhibition. Are you watching?
